Pastry Shopping and Art Deco in Merida

Click for OptionsMerida was the first real Mexican city we visited and what a delight.  Merida is the capital of Yucatan and is said to be a modern style city but it seemed very Mexican to us. A couple of things struck us:  firstly the fantastic architecture, especially the Art Deco which was a real surprise to us.  Art Deco is one of my favorite styles so we spent a lot of time in one of the local theatres spotting Art Deco in every direction.  We may have stayed to see a show if tonight's performance wasn't Peppa Pig!

Our other delight in Merida was buying tasty pastries, mainly sweet ones but also some savoury at the many bakeries scattered around Merida.  We quickly discovered the method of making a purchase which was to pick up one of the metal trays and pair of tongs and to place wanted pastries on the tray and then take this to the cashier for bagging and payment.  We felt like real local's doing this but of course didn't look like locals with my big tourist hat and John towering above everyone.
