San Cristobal |
San Cristobal de Las Casas was another beautiful Colonial style city with the most stunning architecture again. However, we were surprised to see that despite Christmas was long gone, an enormous Christmas tree stood proud in the main square together with Christmas lights, an artificial ice rink, Christmas market and a snow slide. We could have been anywhere in Europe. Once we had got past this "Always Christmas time" type of theme we enjoyed exploring the city, with its many cathedrals, artisan markets and a very good range of cafes and bars.
One of our favorite places though was Casa Na Bolom (House of the Jaguar) which celebrates the history of former life in this city. Casa Na Bolom was worth the walk up the hill to the other side of the city. This vibrant yellow building includes a museum, enormous library, tranquil garden space, cafe and in the centre local people sell hand made wares. I watched a young girl make a pretty little necklace and couldn't resist buying it. It was the only piece of jewelry that I wore for the rest of the trip.
