Escape to Uruguay

After  a few weeks of Tango, lessons in Spanish , hot days and sweaty nights we were ready for a change of pace from the hectic life of Buenos Aires. So we booked a day trip to Colonia a town of 26,000 people in Uruguay a 50 minute journey by boat across one of the worlds widest rivers. At the crack of dawn we set off to catch the first Subte (metro) to the port to catch the ferry

Immediately on arriving in Colonia we noticed a more relaxed and quietly laid back place.

Having spent weeks negotiating Buenos Aries buses and underground it was a joy to get off the boat to an orientation bus tour and a free guided walk around the old town which the Spanish and Portuguese fought over for centuries.

Our normal approach is to run around seeing everything however as the day grew hotter we decided to have a siesta in the local park.

This was so relaxing we drifted off to sleep. Suddenly my face was wet. A large playful dog with a wicked sense of humour took great delight in licking my face and my shocked reaction, joining us as we slept along with another  dog. Suddenly we had joined a pack of dogs. As it was mid-day the phrase ‘Only mad dogs and English men go out in the mid-day sun ‘ crossed my mind.

Soon it was time to search for lunch and eventually we found a cool and wonderful refuge from the mid-day sun, in a restaurant/art museum. Lunch was paella followed with Hot Strawberries and pepper. This is amazing. I took the time to practice photography (lots more practice required)

The plan to visit museums was quickly revised for a walk in the shade. Soon we we joined by our 4 legged friend who now decided to sit on the bench with me.

Colonia is a beautiful place to revive and prepare once again for the hectic lifestyle of Buenos Airies . All too soon it was time to return to Argentina.
