Rochester Sweeps Festival

Rochester Sweeps is the largest May Day celebration in the country with folk bands and Morris dancers from all over the UK and Europe attending.  It is also a mecca for real ale fans.

We go every year and this year was no exception.  After wandering amongst the Morris sides in their amazing costumes and listening to some fine fiddle playing, we met up with friends to watch some bands.  We were immediately mesmerised by the truly amazing “All the King’s Daughters” who were Dutch twin sisters and singer/songwriters:  Nina and Laura Phillips from Haarlem.  You must check them out, their music is hauntingly delicate but somehow full of joy and humour.  They are on U-tube and have just released an EP having got the money through crowd funding.  I have already downloaded to my I-phone.

After a few beers and watching Tanglefoot Appalachian Clog Dancers at the Gordon Hotel, we then wandered around Rochester taking in more bands and walking through the grounds of the awe inspiring Rochester Castle - scene of one of the bloodiest sieges in British history which is now immortalised in the recent film Ironclad.

We then decided it was time to eat so retired to a local restaurant and were amazed to get a seat and tucked into a hearty Italian meal.

Then as our friends headed home we decided the night was young and we headed back to the real ale and our favourite band “Hobo Jones and the Junkyard Dogs.” We have followed them for years - well before they hit the big time at Glastonbury. (We were there to support in the front row).  Outrageous, raw, funny but with hearts of gold and amazingly talented.    We danced the night away with a crowd determined to have fun, bumping literally sometimes into old friends.   Both Hobo Jones and the band before them - “Seagulls are Drunk”, (a French band from Reims who play a mixture of Celtic and original material) were brilliant.

We left at midnight wondering where the time had gone and when, if ever, our hearing would return.
