Today we travelled from the refreshing and bearable temperature in Yala to the stifling heat of Mirissa beach in the South of Sri Lanka. To top it all, our room in our guest house seemed even hotter still and despite having the doors wide open and the fan on, it was cooler outside our room than in.
It is hard not to like Mirissa as it is a pretty little laid back beach resort. It consists of a crescent shaped beach with white sand and turquoise sea. Little cafes, bars and beachside accommodation are located along the coast line. It is called a tropical paradise and it truly is. It would be one of those places that you could just relax so much that you would never want to leave. We had just one day here and our plan was to do very little. We walked up and down the sandy beach and then chilled out for hours in a beachside bar, drinking mango lassis and reading our books.
Night time is even more beautiful here as the sunsets are stunning - bright pinks, oranges and reds fill the sky before the sun disappears altogether over the horizon.
I actually prefer Mirissa at night when the bars and cafes come to life with a bit of music and good food. Fresh fish is on display outside the cafes, and tonight we chose a red snapper to share that was grilled with just a little oil and garlic and served with fresh coleslaw and fries - perfect and a welcome change from curry and rice.
We went to a bar that promised a party atmosphere and fireworks. Well it was a bit more subdued than that with club style music and fireworks that were let off every half hour or so and sometimes seemed to be thrown so near to the tables that the diners leapt from their seat whilst the firework fizzled away. In fact this was the best entertainment of all.
Returning to our still very hot room tonight we spotted a rather large frog climbing up the wall. We were delighted with our house guest as was hoping it would keep the bugs away and thankfully it did.
