Caye Caulker - slowing down in paradise

Beautiful Caye Caulker beach

Caye Caulker Town
The lengthy trip by taxis, public bus and ferry was worth it to arrive at this paradise island.  CC is the most chilled out place I have ever been to and the Island motto (plastered everywhere ) seems to be “Go Slow”.  The Caribbean vibe is most evident here in the people, language, food and wonderful reggae music.

The highlight for us was an amazing sunset cruise in a sailing boat – seeing the sun set on the ocean and watching the stars twinkle in the pitch black sky.  Lulled into a sense of pure relaxation, possibly helped by the unlimited rum punch, I wanted to stay on this boat forever.

Another joy for me was being able to walk around the entire island bare foot as the ground is made of white sand and is not paved like neighbouring islands.  It brought back memories of my teenage years when I used to wander around bare foot on the Island where I lived although there was no white sand in sight there.

The Caribbean food was at its best here with an abundance of freshly caught fish, lobster and crab as well as my favourite – fresh coconut.

Typical meal, chicken, rice, peas, plantain

For many, the highlight here is swimming and snorkeling amongst the beautiful fish and turtles.  For us, we enjoyed more low key activities such as feeding the tarpines (big toothless fish) and hanging out in hammocks.  I can imagine how people could come here and never manage to leave.

Final Evening on Caye Caulker
