The Joys and Challenges of Buenos Aires

As we come to the end of our time in BA and our first month in South America, we are reflecting on the joys and challenges we have experienced.

Firstly the challenges of:
Getting to understand how to live in a new City where we understand so little of the language,

Surviving in an old house with a poorly equipped and antiquated kitchen. In fact we saw a replica of it in a history museum.

Shopping almost daily as we can't carry much and food storage is limited

Washing clothes by hand and hoping they dry on the line before the sudden bursts of rain

Navigating the public transport system and particularly the crazy buses

But the Joys far outway the challenges. Our highlights of BA are:
Bomba De Tiempo - a frenetic drumming band which performs every Monday in an outside venue which is packed with people partying to the music. It has a real festival feel to it.

The beautiful parks of Palmerno including the rose gardens, botanic gardens and the gardens housing the Planetarium - a truly worthwhile show to see and a test of one's Spanish.

Sundays in trendy Recoleta or La Boca or San Telmo districts

Watching an outdoor tango milonga in the park under the stars and having a go at dancing tango ourselves.

The empanadas, medialunas and good food

And most of all the people, particularly those on our Spanish course who we enjoyed being with and miss already. If anyone is thinking of studying Spanish in Buenos Aires, we thoroughly recommend Verbum School.
