Despite feeling jet lagged we set off on our first day in Tokyo to explore the Asakusa area which is one of the oldest districts in the city. On our way to our first intended stop - the Skytree Tower, we passed theTokyo Cruise office and feeling tired we thought a nice relaxing cruise down the river would be a pleasant way to see more of the city. The cruise itself was restful but the scenery was one of the most unattractive views ever. The 90 minute return trip sailed past grey tower block after grey tower block and under numerous concrete bridges. Nevertheless it was pleasant to sit and watch the world go by.
Once off the boat and after a 20 minute walk accross to the other side of the river we arrived at the Skytree observation tower. The tower is one of the world's tallest freestanding towers and stands at 634m. We headed for the first observation deck at 350m. We'd been warned to expect long queues but discovered that for just £5 more we could purchase a fast track ticket for foreigners which meant a 10 minute wait compared to an hour wait. No contest! The ride in the lift to the 350m viewing platform took about 10 seconds and was so smooth that we didn't realise we had moved at all. The view was incredible and not surprisingly by now was of miles and miles if more grey buildings. Not a spot of green in sight!
Next up was Sensi-ji Temple. Pagoda and Shrine. The deep red ornate architecture was beautiful. As we entered the complex we pass a large incense cauldron smouldering away. The smoke is meant to bring good health which is why it is surrounded in crowds of people rubbing the smoke into their clothes. The temple itself is said to enshrine a golden image of Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy but given that the image is not on view, no one knows if it really exists!
Finally off for a delicious bowl of ramen noodles for dinner.
