Final thoughts on Japan

There is so much more to say on Japan about what makes it so unique but in order to keep it brief, we have highlighted a few aspects that stood out to us:

Crazy entertainment:  On one of our first nights in Tokyo we went to weird and wild Robot Restaurant Cabaret Show.  As we entered the neon lighted psychedelic room we wondered what we had let ourselves in for.  Even the toilet was psychedelic from floor to ceiling.  As for the show itself, we sat open mouthed watching enormous mechanical robots being wheeled out and into mock fights.  The taiko drumming was impressive but most of the time we giggled away at the various robot incarnations including a giant Kung Fu panda and daft punk type figures.  When we got out into the night our ears were still buzzing from the noise but the light show continued as we were standing in the neon light district of Tokyo known as Shinjuko.

Our last night in Tokyo ended in a fitting way with a visit to a karaoke place.  We had expected this to be a large bar filled with people doing karaoke.  What we didn’t expect was a private karaoke booth for our little party of 6 where the price included karaoke for an hour, an opportunity to dress up in the available fancy dress costumes and as much as you can drink! Actually we didn’t have much time to drink as the hour passes so quickly by searching through the massive song books, keying in the song code and belting out a terrible rendition of the original song.  Not having done Karaoke before, I didn’t know it could be this much fun.  (Sorry, not photos of the fancy dress karaoke are available or suitable for public viewing).

High Tech Toilets

Many toiles have heated seats, music that plays when you sit down and a range of buttons that squirt water, adjust the water pressure, dry etc.  Originally a bit daunting but a bit of fun after a while.  Now we don’t know how we will survive without a heated toilet seat.  We wonder why these high tech toilets have not reached the rest of the Western world yet.

Vending Machines

Everything it seems can be purchased from a vending machine.  I thought it strange that when I originally booked this trip a young sales assistant raved about the vending machines.  At the time, I thought this was a rather peculiar selling point but now I totally understand.  Vending machines are everywhere and sell, cold drinks, hot drinks including hot coffee in a can or hot soup in a can....food, cigarettes and I am told even shirts and ties in case one needs to buy one for work tomorrow!  Given that Japan is one of the safest countries in the world, vending machines are not broken into.

Food

We have to mention the fantastic range of food that we sampled in Japan – all of which was so beautifully presented.  There were oodles of noodles including: soba noodles (buckwheat noodles served hot or cold), udon (flat wheat noodles) ramen noodles, fried noodles. We eat tempura, dumplings, rice dishes, sushi and one of my favourites the okonomiyaki which is a type of Japanese pancake with a range of fillings. However, the most fun night was a visit to one of the “bits on stick” type eateries where diners cook their own meat, veg, fish on skewers in a small fryer pan of oil that is inserted in each table.  At the restaurant we went to, the deal was to eat and drink as much as you want but only within 90 minutes – we of course rose to the challenge.  Japan is certainly a food lovers’ paradise/

So it is time to say Sayonara from this blog, we have some fantastic memories and would definitely recommend a trip to Japan.  Finally, we would like to thank our lovely travelling companions on this trip: Joanne, Patrick, Sarah, Ellie, Joanna and our trusted leader Ben.
